Our Manni -Part II

PART II - 02 AUGUST to 08 AUGUST 2009
As written in Part I, Manni was admitted in Ayushman hospital, Dwaraka, near Srikanth's house on 21 July 2009 for suspected pneumonia. She was in the ICU, her condition erratic at times, but generally improving. On 1st August at around 6-30PM, she was brought to the Recovery room as her condition was stable and vastly improved.

As all of us heaved a sigh of relief, suddenly and without any symptoms, her condition turned bad at 8-30 or so and she was rushed back to the ICU for emergency medication. Unfortunately she could not survive this and she passed away at 1210 midnight on 1st-2nd August. ஆடி, சுக்ல, துவாதஸி

02 AUGUST 2009 - Sunday - Cremation

We were informed of this shocking development at 1220 AM and we were stunned. Vijaya and I decided to fly to Delhi immediately and Arvind & Krithika booked our airtickets at 2 AM for the 6-45 flight. Sugavanam also was to come with us. We left our house by 0415 in a calltaxi and picked up Sugavanam on our way. The Air India flight took off by 7-40AM, one hour behind schedule and reached Delhi at 1015 after a nice breakfast of mini Idli, Uppuma, bun with jam and butter, fruits, coffee.

Srikanth received us at the IGI airport and we were home by 11. Manni had been laid in Vasu's house (Vikaspuri) and everyone was in uncontrollable tears. We too broke down. Rama, Satyamurthy had reached by 8-30AM from Hyderabad. Sastrigal was waiting for our arrival. The last rites then started in the house and the body was taken to the Mayaanam at Tilak Nagar at 1230 noon. A large number of people (nearly 150) had gathered there to pay their respects to Manni. The cremation was by the traditional method, using logs and wood. Vasu lit the funeral pyre and it was the end of Manni.

We returned home by 2-30 and took bath. We two stayed at Vasu's place .

03 Aug 2009 -Monday - Immersing Asthi in Ganga

We left house by 7-15 AM for the mayaanam; after the rites there, Vasu, Sridhar, Srikanth, Ravi collected the Asthi. Self, Vijaya, Vasu, Sridhar, Srikanth, Sugavanam, Satyamurthy, Gopal, Raghavan, Rama, Bama, Vaidesh, Anand, Abhilash then started in 3 cars for immersion of the Asthi.

It was planned to go to a place called Gud, 130 kms away, near Meerut, where Ganga flows. After breakfast on the way, we proceeded towards this place. None of us knew the correct route, so we had to get the directions frequently. The travel took double the planned time and, after travelling for more than 5 hours, we encountered a huge traffic jam - we had to come back as we couldn't proceed ahead.

By 4-00 PM we had reached a place where Ganga was flowing. Here Vasu immersed the Asthi-kalasam; we couldn't take bath at this place. So we travelled for another 30 km to a place called "the Upper Ganga." All of us took bath in Ganga river. The water was chill and cold and flowing fast, but it was divine. We had carried Elumicham pazha saatham and Thayir saatham and we ate this at 5-45 PM. Travelling for another 3 hours, we finally reached Vasu's house at 8-30 PM.

It was a hectic travel but the bath in Ganga was most satisfying.

04 Aug 2009 - Tuesday - Vasu's house

What-To-Do-Lists were prepared. Sastrigal came at 0745 AM and gave the list of தான சாமான்கள் and other things to purchase. Discussion with one caterer. Sugavanam left Delhi by 4-45 PM flight for Chennai. After dropping him, I, Vijaya, Srikanth, Jayshri, Anand, Srinath drove to Munirka and then to Karolbagh to purchase the தான சாமான்கள். We were back in Srikanth's house (Dwaraka) at 8-30 PM. Slept there.

Another group, Sridhar, Chitra, Rama, Usha went in Sridhar's car for purchase of clothes.

We were told that Saroja, Srividya, and Mangalam were miffed that Vasu didn't call them and inform re the passing away. Very strange.

05 Aug 2009 - Wednesday - Vasu's house.

Got up at 0610 and listened to Gita Upanyasam. After lunch at Srikanth's place, we and Srikanth's family left at 2-30 PM for Vasu's place. On the way, we purchased கம்பளி, bedsheets,பூந்தொட்டி, செங்கல், etc. Yesterday's proposals of arranging caterer for breakfast and dinner were turned down today - the ladies told they would cook. Caterer would supply just the lunch from the 9th day.

The caterer Mr Kumar (Radha's brother) came at 8-30PM and we had a detailed discussion on our needs. Lunch on 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 13th Days. Breakfast (Idli) and dinner (roti) on 10th. Sambhar saatham-Thayir saatham packets on 13th evening.

They returned at 1-30PM after a successful mission. Lunch at Sridhar's place and then at 3-15 PM we left for Usha's house. Purchase of some groceries near Usha's house. We slept in Usha's house.

07 Aug 2009 - Friday - Usha, Srikanth house

My birthday today; I am 68. Got up at 0620 and listened to Gita upanyasam. Lunch at Usha's house. By 12 noon, Sridhar came there in car and took us (Rama & Satyamurthy also) to Srikanth's house at Dwaraka. The karyams from 10th Day will be performed at Srikanth's place only. Ravi, Radha, Bama, Raghavan came to Srikanth's house. I expressed a desire to eat வத்தல்குழம்பு so Jayashri prepared - very tasty. For others, chappati - Daal.

At Chennai, four bypasses have been done for Sugavanam at Malar hospital.

08 Aug 2009 - Saturday - Srikanth's house.

Woke up by 0430 but got up at 0530 AM. The entire GSR family except for 5-6 members assembled at Srikanth's place. Breakfast பூரி - கிழங்கு. Not much work today. Rama, Sridhar, Srikanth went to the airport to receive her. Earlier in the morning, Gopi arrived by Tamilnadu Express; Ravi had received him. Gopi never talked with anyone !

Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram

ANNA CENTENARY LIBARARY (அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம்) is a newly established State Library of Tamilnadu. It was declared open on 15th Sept 2010. Located in Kotturpuram, Chennai. This last Sunday, 1st May 2011, we hit upon the idea - we will go and see this library. No serious reason, but a sudden whiff of fancy. Vijaya, her old classmate and friend Mrs Prema, and I left house at 3-30PM. A bus upto Madhya Kailash, and an auto thereon, left us at the gates of this huge, beautiful building at 4 PM. From the outside, it was immensely impressive and imposing - maybe of 9 or 10 floors, exquisitely constructed. As we walked the lawns to reach the Main Entrance, the interest in us was bubbling. (Caution: Handbags, Cameras are strictly prohibited. Even waterbottles are not allowed inside the halls.) There is a 5-feet bronze statue of Mr CN Annadurai, in whose name and honour this library is built. This is the Tamilnadu Chief minister Mr M Karunanidhi's pet project and he, as usual, has ov...
