GRS Family and Hospitals

JAYARAMAN

On Thursday, June 4th, 2009 Jayaraman had a "minor mishap" at his home in Vadapalani - he fell down when trying to sit in a chair. Feeling a lot of pain, he got himself admitted in Sri Ramachandra hospital, Porur by 2 PM. I saw him in the hospital 3 days later, on Sunday 7th of June. He is to be in the hospital for 45 days as per doctors ! Many in the family visited him.

We went to the hospital again on 15 June. Jayaraman got discharged on 21 June from SRMC. Admitted in SRMC for the 2nd time on 16 July. We went to the hospital on 18th and saw Jayaraman. He was discharged on the evening of 21 July 2009.

At home now, Jayaraman is walking with the aid of a walker, but still complains of pain in the knee-joint.

VIJAY
Vijay was behaving oddly since 6th June, according to Jayaraman. No one actually knows what is the exact problem, but it was guessed that Vijay may be, just maybe, taking alcoholic drinks. Jayaraman put him in a deaddiction centre at Perungudi on 22 July 2009. Vijay was there for a month, and has now been discharged on 19th August. He is, according to Jayaraman, improving and fine.

SUGAVANAM
Sugavanam has been complaining of breathlessness and "tired". After his return from New Delhi on 4th August, he was admitted in Malar hospital on 6th August for angiogram. The test revealed some blocks and a bypass surgery was advised. Bypass surgery was done on 7 August (4 blocks) and he was brought to ICU on 8th Aug. After 3 days in ICU, Sugavanam was brought to the room on 11th August and discharged on 14th August. Sugavanam is presently fine and improving. We visited him at his house on 15th, after we returned from Delhi.

MANNIi
On Monday, 25 May 2009 evening Manni suddenly didn't feel well - sort of disoriented talking and no sensation on the right side. She was rushed to a doctor who did her blood test; he asked to take her to a neurosurgeon the next day. On 26th morning an MRI was taken and it revealed a clot in the left side of the brain. Neurosurgeon gave some tablets. Though Manni was improving, she had "stopped" talking to anybody. After 10-15 days, she started speaking slowly and shortly.

On Sunday 19th July she developed temperature and it was diagonosed as "viral fever" and was treated for this. But on 21 July 2009 she had another paralytic attack on the right side; while being taken to a hospital, heavy traffic jams compelled them to change their plans and Manni was finally admitted in Ayushman Hospital in Dwarka, near Srikanth's house. She was admitted in ICU. Two days later, the doctors diagonosed the fever as pneumonia. Chest congestion developed and continuous medication started showing some improvement.

After 12 days in ICU, Manni showed progress and at 7 PM on 1 August 2009, she was brought to recovery room. When everyone thought the worse was over, her condition suddenly turned bad and at 8 PM she was re-admitted in ICU. Suddenly she was critical. We came to know of this shocking news at 8-30PM. I phoned everybody that time and again at 1030PM. Her organs started collapsing one by one and she passed away at 12:10 midnight (01 - 02 August). Srikanth informed me this most painful news at 12:20. Vijaya and I booked our air tickets at 2 AM, left house in a call taxi at 4-30 AM, picked up Sugavanam on the way, took the Air India flight at 6-40 AM for Delhi. We returned home after the 13th day rituals. Sugavanam returned on the 4th day. Gopi, Savithri, Sundaresan, Pattu Manni came to Delhi on the 8th day evening. Sundaresan, Pattu Manni, Gopi left after 10th day rites; Savithri left Delhi after the 13th day rites.

Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram

ANNA CENTENARY LIBARARY (அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம்) is a newly established State Library of Tamilnadu. It was declared open on 15th Sept 2010. Located in Kotturpuram, Chennai. This last Sunday, 1st May 2011, we hit upon the idea - we will go and see this library. No serious reason, but a sudden whiff of fancy. Vijaya, her old classmate and friend Mrs Prema, and I left house at 3-30PM. A bus upto Madhya Kailash, and an auto thereon, left us at the gates of this huge, beautiful building at 4 PM. From the outside, it was immensely impressive and imposing - maybe of 9 or 10 floors, exquisitely constructed. As we walked the lawns to reach the Main Entrance, the interest in us was bubbling. (Caution: Handbags, Cameras are strictly prohibited. Even waterbottles are not allowed inside the halls.) There is a 5-feet bronze statue of Mr CN Annadurai, in whose name and honour this library is built. This is the Tamilnadu Chief minister Mr M Karunanidhi's pet project and he, as usual, has ov...

Dr. MUTHULAKSHMI REDDY

Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy The road from Adyar Signal to Thiruvanmiyur signal (in Chennai) is called Lattice Bridge Road (LB Road); this English name was re-christened as Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Road long back, but the old English name only prevails now. Who is this Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy? In the princely state of Pudukkottai there lived Narayanaswami Iyer who married a devadasi by name Chandramma - this marriage created a sensation that time. To this couple, eight children were born out of whom four died as infants. Muthulakshmi was one that survived (born: 30 July 1886). M's sister Nallamuthu, learned English, went on to study in UK, became a Professor in QMC, Chennai, and later its Principal - the first Indian principal of QMC. Muthulakshmi went to a school in Pudukottai till the age of 13; later she studied at home tutored by teachers. She passed matriculation in the year 1902. She started dreaming about becoming a graduate. Bur her father, with meagre pension could not send her ...
