Kamu paatti as all of us call her was an extremely lovable person. She loved all her grandchildren a lot starting from Santosh to Srinath.

Our paatti was born on 3rd June 1935 in an orthodox Brahmin family in Thanjavur. She was brought up on the musical soil of Thiruvaiyaru. She had a good knowledge of Carnatic music and often visited Thyagaraja Temple for Thyagaraja aradhanais. She had enjoyed her childhood at the belt of Cauveri, playing, bathing in the river and studying with her 4 brothers & 2 sisters.
Kamu paati was married in the year 1956 at the age of 21 , to our thatha G. S. Ramachandran lovingly called as ‘Anna’ by his brothers and sisters, at Kumbakonam. Our kollu patti named her ‘Mythili’ after marriage. They started their married life at Cuddalore.

Since our ‘Chandru’ thatha was a well known post master in South Arcot district, our patti got the pet title "post office mami". They have lived in lot of places in South Arcot like Pennadam, Panruti, Pudhupettai, Chinna Salem and in Cuddalore itself – Devanampattinam, Thirupapuliyur and Manjakuppam.

She was the mother of 4 sons and 3 daughters namely Rama, Vasu, Sridhar, Usha, Srikanth and the twins Ravi and Bama. She was a responsible daughter-in-law of GRS family. She made everyone happy in the big joint family, took care and managed the house with her best efforts during hard times as though she had done PHD in managing a beautiful house. But to know she studied till 8th standard only. She helped her children and guided them to the right, cultured way of life. At every point of her life she had added many moral values to each and every one in the family.

After Usha Aththai’s marriage she shifted to Delhi on 10th June, 1988 along with her children.
Demise of thatha in 1989 had been a great loss to everyone in the family. With her great management skills and self confidence our patti managed to conduct marriages of her five children. She became "patti" for the first time when Santhosh was born in 1984, to her first daughter Rama. Patti was on cloud nine to have her first grandson in her hands. 2 years later she heard another voice calling her patti – Sathish. Within 17 more years she had 11 more grand children – vignesh, sruthi, viba, abilash, vaidesh, sandhya, sujani, anand, veena, ranjani, and srinath.

We, Sruthi, viba, abilash and vaidesh, still remember how patti used to tell us stories while we all lay around her in single cot in the afternoons…… She taught all of us slogams and taught music to viba, sruthi and ranjani. She used to go to take the pension with abilash and anand and used to bring Arisi Mittai and Meen Mittai for all of us. She used to hand stitch small and cute dresses for our dolls. When Sruthi, Anand vaidesh and Ranjani’s parents were out for their jobs she looked after us.

She was the first person to wish each and everyone on their birthdays and marriage anniversaries without fail. We all used to gather around her for celebration of festivals and functions. She always gifted us with useful gifts. She used to enjoy the dance performances by Sujani, Sandhya and Veena. She was the ‘message’ centre of our family that is, everyone updated her with day-today information. She passed on those messages to each and everyone in our family.

Even now Srinath the youngest and pet to patti, believes that she is in hospital and she will come back soon to play with him.

She was a friend, great philosopher and mentor for our family. There is a lot more to say but we cannot express everything through the words.

We all, the entire GRS family miss her a lot and no one can replace her ever.

All her Grandchildren.

Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram

ANNA CENTENARY LIBARARY (அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம்) is a newly established State Library of Tamilnadu. It was declared open on 15th Sept 2010. Located in Kotturpuram, Chennai. This last Sunday, 1st May 2011, we hit upon the idea - we will go and see this library. No serious reason, but a sudden whiff of fancy. Vijaya, her old classmate and friend Mrs Prema, and I left house at 3-30PM. A bus upto Madhya Kailash, and an auto thereon, left us at the gates of this huge, beautiful building at 4 PM. From the outside, it was immensely impressive and imposing - maybe of 9 or 10 floors, exquisitely constructed. As we walked the lawns to reach the Main Entrance, the interest in us was bubbling. (Caution: Handbags, Cameras are strictly prohibited. Even waterbottles are not allowed inside the halls.) There is a 5-feet bronze statue of Mr CN Annadurai, in whose name and honour this library is built. This is the Tamilnadu Chief minister Mr M Karunanidhi's pet project and he, as usual, has ov
