அப்பா ஸ்ராத்தம் 26-08-2015 அப்பாவின் ஸ்ராத்தம் இந்த வருஷம்  ஆகஸ்ட் 26 புதன்கிழமை   நடந்தது. வழக்கம் போல 5 நாட்களுக்கு முன்பே மளிகை சாமான்களை வாங்கிவிட்டோம். மார்த்தாண்டன் கடையிலிருந்து வாங்கினோம். 25-ஆம் தேதி நாங்கள்  திருவான்மியூர் மார்க்கெட்டிலிருந்து காய்கறிகள்  காய்கறிகள, பழங்கள், வாழையிலை வாங்கினோம். அன்று மாலை 4-45க்கு காய்கறிகள் நறுக்க ஆரம்பித்தோம்; 7-30 மணிக்கு முடிந்தது. பாத்திரங்கள் தேய்த்து வைப்பதும் முடிந்தது. மறுநாள் 26-8 -2015 காலை 4 -30க்கு இரண்டு பேரும் எழுந்து, குளித்து விட்டோம்; ஸ்ராத்த சமையலை விஜயாவும் கிருத்திகாவும் ஆரம்பித்தனர். 8-30 முதல் சரோஜா,மங்களம், சுகவனம் வந்தனர்.  10:15 க்கு 2 பிராமணாளும் 11-25 க்கு சாஸ்திரிகளும் வந்தனர். ஸ்ரீ வெங்கடேச சர்மாதான் வாத்யார்.  11:30க்கு ஆரம்பித்த ஸ்ராத்தம் 1-!5 க்கு பிராமணாள் சாப்பிட்டதும் 90% முடிந்தது. சாஸ்திரிகள் நன்றாக பண்ணி வைத்தார்.  சுகவனத்தின் உடல்நலம் சரியாக இல்லாததால் அவன் போய் படுத்துக் கொண்டு விட்டான். விஷ்ணு இலையில் சாப்பிட குமார் வந்தா...

Amma's Sraththam - 2014 Amma's Thithi is Aani, Krishna Paksham, Ashtami. This year (2014) amma's thithi came on Friday, 20 June 2014. Vijaya and I purchased the grocery items from Marthandam Stores, Lakshmipuram, Thiruvanmiyur. Vathyar Samangal like erumuttai, saraay were available in the house. A day before the thithi, on 19-06-2014,we purchased all the vegetables and fruits, and Vazhai Ilai from Thiruvanmiyur market.  Earlier we purchased four blouse bits from Mylapore.  On 19th evening, Vijaya and I cut vegetables. and made all prelim works.  On the day of Sraththam, we two got up by 4-45 AM and started the work. At 08:00 Jayaraman came with Kalyani and Purnima. They have shifted to Chennaipattinam 45 km away recently. Sugavanam followed. Saroja did not come and Mangalam had gone to Thiruvannamalai. அப்பா ஸ்ராத்தம் - 16-09-2013 அப்பாவின் ஸ்ராத்தம் இந்த வருஷம் 16 செப்டம்பர் திங்கட்கிழமை   நடந்தது. வழக்கம் போல 7 நாட்களுக்கு முன்பே மளிகை சாமான்களை வாங்கிவிட்டோம். மார்த்தாண்டன் கடையிலிருந்து வாங்கினோம். ஞாயிறு 15-ஆம் தேதி நாங்கள்  மந்தைவெளிக்கு ஒரு கல்யாணத்திற்கு காரில் சென்றோம். அங்கு கோவை பழமுதிர் நிலையத்தில் காய்கறிகள, பழங்கள் வாங்கினோம். தூக்க வேண்டிய சிரமம் குறைந்தது. பிறகு, 10 மணிக்கு திருவான்மியூர் மார்க்கெட் சென்று, வாழையிலை வெற்றிலை, வாழைக்காய் போன்றவற்றையும் ,விட்டுப்போன மீதி காய்கறிகளையும் வாங்கினோம். அன்று மாலை 4-45க்கு காய்கறிகள் நறுக்க ஆரம்பித்தோம்; 7 மணிக்கு முடிந்தது. பாத்திரங்கள் தேய்த்து வைப்பதும் முடிந்தது. மறுநாள் 16-09-2013 காலை 5 -15க்கே இரண்டு பேரும் எழுந்து, குளித்து விட்டோம்; ஸ்ராத்த சமையலை விஜயாவும் கிருத்திகாவும் ஆரம்பித்தனர். 7-00 க்கு  சரோஜா அக்காவும், மங்களமும், சுகவனமும் வந்தனர். விஜயா, கிருத்திகா, மங்களம், சரோஜா ஆகிய நால்வரும் சமையலில் ஈடுபட்டனர். 10:15 க்கு 2 பிராமணாளும், 11-15க்கு சாஸ்திரிகளும் வந்தனர். ஸ்ரீ வெங்கடேச ச...

Amma's Sraththam - 2013 Amma's Thithi is Aani, Krishna Paksham, Ashtami. This year (2013) amma's thithi came on Sunday, 30 June 2013. Vijaya and I purchased the grocery items from Marthandam Stores, Lakshmipuram, Thiruvanmiyur. Vathyar Samangal like erumuttai, saraay were available in the house. A day before the thithi, on 29-06-2013,we purchased all the vegetables and fruits, and Vazhai Ilai from Thiruvanmiyur market.  Earlier we purchased three blouse bits from Thiruvanmiyur itself.  On 29th evening, Vijaya and I cut vegetables. and made all prelim works. As the servant maid is absent for a long time, Vijay washed all the utensils needed. On the day of Sraththam, we two got up by 4-45 AM and started the work. At 06:15 Jayaraman came with Kalyani. அப்பா ஸ்ராத்தம் - 28-08-2012 அப்பாவின் ஸ்ராத்தம் இந்த வருஷம் 28 ஆகஸ்ட் செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை (நேற்று) நடந்தது. வழக்கம் போல பத்து நாட்களுக்கு முன்பே மளிகை சாமான்களை வாங்கிவிட்டோம். மார்த்தாண்டன் கடையிலிருந்து வாங்கினோம். ஞாயிறு 26-ஆம் தேதி நாங்கள் படூருக்கு காரில் கிளம்பினோம். போகும் வழியில் திருவான்மியூர் மார்க்கெட்டில் தேவையான பழங்களையும், பல காய்கறிகளையும் வாங்கினோம். தூக்க வேண்டிய சிரமம் குறைந்தது. மறுநாள் 27-ஆம் தேதி காலை வெற்றிலை, வாழையிலை, மீதி காய்கறிகளையும் வாங்கினோம். திருவான்மியூர் மார்க்கெட்டில் வாழையிலை விலை மிகவும் அதிகம் எனத் தோன்றியது. வீட்டு வாத்யார் சந்திரன் சாஸ்திரிகள் உடம்பு முடியாமல் இருப்பதால், அவரது மருமான் ஸ்ரீ சாம்பமூர்த்தி வாத்யாரிடம் சொல்லியிருந்தேன். அம்மா ஸ்ராத்தத்திற்கு இவர்தான் வந்தார். ஆனால் திங்கட்கிழமை மாலை 7 மணிக்கு ஃபோன் பேசி, தான் வர இயலாது, இன்னொருவரை அனுப்பி வைக்கிறேன் என்று இவர் சொல்லிவிட்டார். திங்கட்கிழமை மாலை 4-45க்கு காய்கறிகள் நறுக்க ஆரம்பித்தோம்; 7 மணிக்கு முடிந்தது. பாத்திரங்கள் தேய்த்து வைப்பதும் முடிந்தது. மறுநாள் காலை 4-15க்கே இரண்டு ...

Vijaya and I purchased the grocery items and Vaathiyar saamangal from Marthandam Stores, Lakshmipuram, Thiruvanmiyur. . Two days before the thithi, we purchased all the vegetables from Thiruvanmiyur market. On 11th morning I purchased Vaazhai Ilai  from North Mada Street Thiruvanmiyur. This year too I missed the Mylapore ambience. Earlier we purchased blouse bits from Thiruvanmiyur itself. Arvind purchased fruits from MG Road, Besant nagar. On 10th evening, Vijaya and I cut vegetables. and made all prelim works. On 11th, the day of Sraththam, we two got up by 5-00 AM and started the work. Appa's Sraththam - 2011 Appa's Thithi is Aavani, Sukla, Dwadasi. This year (2011) appa's thithi came on Thursday.  08 September. This is the second sraththam we perform at Kalakshetra avenue. Vijaya and I purchased all the items like grocery, vegetables, fruits, Vetrilai, pushpam, Vennai, and particularly Vazhai Ilai from around Thiruvanmiyur. This time too got the long variety of pudalangkaai. I purchased Vazhai Ilai from the road-side kadai near Reliance Fresh on 8th morning. Ilais were very expensive this time. Savithri came from Hosur on the previous evening and she, I and Vijaya cut all the vegetables. On 8th, all the three of us  got up by 5-30 in the morning and Vijaya and Savithri started work. Jayaraman, Kalyani, Purnima came by 7-15. Then Saroja, and later Sugavanam. Padma, Prakash, Rajeswari arrived by 10-30. Amma's Sraththam - 2011 We three brothers (Sugavanam, Jayaraman, and self) perform the sraththams of our parents every year at Chennai; our elder brother Sundaresan performs at Dapodi, Pune. Amma's Thithi is Aani, Krishna Paksham, Ashtami. This year (2011) amma's thithi came on Thursday, 23rd June. This is the first ever sraththam that we are performing at our OWN house (Flat F2, No 3, Kalakshetra Avenue, 2nd Street, Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai 41). All these years we were doing it in rented houses. Appa's Sraththam - 2010 Appa's Thithi is Aavani, Sukla, Dwadasi. This year (2010) appa's thithi came on Saturday, 21 August. This is the second sraththam we performed at Besantnagar house. Sraththam followed Varalakshmi Poojai, on the very next day. Hectic work, naturally. Vijaya and I purchased all the items  like grocery, vegetables, fruits, Vetrilai, pushpam, Vennai, and particularly Vazhai Ilai  from around Besantnagar. This time we could get the long variety of pudalangkaai from KPN. For Amma's sraththam, we couldn't get. I had ordered Vazhai Ilai from the beach-front cartwala who promptly delivered on the morning of sraththam. The Ilais were large sized and cheap. I and Vijaya cut all the vegetables by 8PM the previous day. We were all set. On 21st, we got up by 4-45 in the morning and Vijaya started work. Jayaraman, Kalyani, Purnima came by 6-30. மன்னியின் ஆப்தீக ஸ்ராத்தம். பெரிய மன்னி (மைதிலி) சென்ற ஆண்டு 2009 ஆகஸ்ட் மாஸம் 1-2 ஆம் தேதி நடு இரவில் காலமானார். அவரது ஆப்தீக ஸ்ராத்தம் இந்த வருஷம் 2010 ஜூலை 22-ஆம் தேதி தில்லியில் நடந்தது. அதற்கு விஜயாவும் நானும் ஜூலை 16 காலை ராஜதானி எக்ஸ்பிரஸில் சென்னையிலிருந்து கிளம்பினோம். அர்விந்த் காரில் சென்ட்ரல் ஸ்டேஷன் வந்தோம். தில்லியில் வாசுவும், அபிலாஷும் வந்து எங்களைக் கூட்டிச் சென்றனர்; ஸ்ரீகாந்த் வீட்டில் காரியங்கள் நடந்தன. நாங்கள் அங்குதான் இருந்தோம். ஞாயிறு, ஜூலை 18 ஊன மாஸிகம் நடைபெற்றது.இதுதான் 4வதும் இந்த வருஷத்தில் செய்யப்படும் கடைசியுமான மாஸிகம். வாசு, ஸ்ரீதர், ஸ்ரீகாந்த், ரவி நால்வரும் கலந்து கொண்டனர். சாஸ்திரிகள் 11-30 மணிக்கு வந்து, காரியத்தை ஆரம்பித்தார். மதியம் 1-30க்கு முடிந்தது. 2-45 க்கு சாப்பாடு முடிந்தது. தயிர் பச்சடி, பழப் பச்சடி, வாழைக்காய், சேப்பங்கிழங்கு, பாகற்காய் என 3 கறிகள், (எல்லா கறிகளிலும் நிறைய தேங்காய்) , கொத்தவரங்காய் கூட்டு, வாழைத்தண்டு மோர்க்குழம்பு, ரசம், தயிர், எள் உருண்டை, பயத்தம் உருண்டை, அதிரஸம், வடை, பயத்தம் பருப்பு பாயஸம் என திவஸ சமையல்தா...

One year has gone by since KVS athimber left us last year on 25 Nov 2008. Yesterday (Wednesday, 9 Dec 2009) was the Varusha aptika Sraththam. We two left our house by 07-15 (arvind dropped us at the bus stand) and we went by 47A and 71E (from Taylors Road); reached Ambattur by 9 AM. Sastrigals started the rituals by 1045 and it was over by 1245. 2 brahmanals ate. Then we had meals. Apart from Padma akka, Prakash, Rajeswari, Srividya, we were the only two extra. Srividya’s husband and daughters didn’t come because of exams. Rajeswari and Srividya prepared the entire sraththam meals. Saroja and athimber came there by 6PM. After night meals, all of us slept there. Thursday, 10 Dec 2009: Today is the subhasyam (grekkiam). Jayaraman, Kalyani, Purnima, Rajeswari’s parents, KVS’s nephew Ramakrishnan and his wife (total 11 + 4) were the additions today. A day before the sraththam, Vijaya had to go to Mylapore again (alone) to purchase Vennai, Vaazhai Ilai and Pushpam. This time we could get the long variety of pudalangkaai. Girija passed away on 25 November 2007 at 5-15PM. Her varusha Aaptikam was on 10th, 12th, 13th, and 14th Dec 2008 at Chennai. 10 Dec 2008, Wednesday was the ஊன மாஸிகம் . We didn't attend it. 12 Dec 2008 , Friday was the Aaptika ஸோதகும்பம் . We two reached Sugavanam's house by 8-45 AM. Savithri had come to Chennai on 6th Dec for these Kariyams. She, Saroja, Sudha had started preparations for cooking. One Sastrigal came by 10 AM and Sothakumbham was completed by 1040. After this Brahmin finished meals, we all ate. Then we left by 1-30 PM. 13 Dec 2008, Saturday was the Aaptika Sraththam .  We reached Sugavanam's place by 9-15. Vijaya took bath there, wore the 9-yd sari and participated in the kariyams. APPA's Sraththam - 2008 As I wrote earlier , amma's sraththam was on 26 June 2008 . Appa's thithi is on Friday, 12 Sep 2008. As usual this was performed at our house at Karpagam Avenue. We started purchasing the grocery items, butter, varatti etc a week earlier; the vegetables 2 days earlier. A day before the sraththam, on 11 Sep, Padma akka, Athimber came by 7 PM, though we waited for them since 4 PM. Krithika went to Mylapore in the evening to purchase vaazhai ilai, pazham, Pushpam etc. Vijaya and I started cutting vegetables like Pudalankai, Paagarkai, Senaikkizhangu, Vaazhaikkai, Vaazhai Thandu, maankai etc. As we had already disposed off our dining table and cots, we had to adjust Padma and athimber in Aditi's bed (arvind had gone to Goa for a week) and the Divan. Amma's Sraththam - 2008 Earlier, on 30 June 2005 I had written about the Sraththam. We three brothers (Sugavanam, Jayaraman, and self) perform the sraththams of our parents every year at Chennai; our elder brother Sundaresan performs at Dapodi, Pune. Amma's Thithi comes sometime in June or July, and appa's in August or September every year. Till 29 June 2005 , we were performing these two Thithis at Sugavanam's place in Thiruvanmiyur. Starting from 15 Sep 2005 , we are doing it at our house at Karpagam Avenue, Raja Annamalaipuram. This year (2008) amma's thithi came on Thursday 26 June 2008. The earlier day (25 June) morning 1015, Padma akka and Athimber arrived at our house for the ceremony. Arun came at 4-45 PM and we two went to South Mada veedhi and purchased Vaazhai Ilai, pushpam, vazhaippazham and a few vegetables. My Mother's Sraththam Ceremony Yesterday, 29 June 2005, was my mother's ceremony (Thithi) day. Every year we three brothers perform this Thithi in the month of Aani, Sukla Ashtami. (The fourth brother performs it at Pune). We are joined by our sisters. The ceremony is a tight ritual to be followed very strictly. The sastrigal comes by 1000 hours to conduct the ceremony with almost never-ending mantras and rituals. One day I will describe these rituals. After about two and a half hours, the ceremony comes to an end with a feast to the sastrigal who is (are) considered to be that person for whom we are performing Thithi. Clearly, it is a day for remembering those who had passed away long back with love and reverence. Yesterday, we remembered our mother who passed away 22 years ago. Rajappa 30 June 2005
