Savithri and Saveetha Hospital - Part 2

6 May 2008 to 23 May 2008
Prev : Part 1
Tuesday, 6 May 2008. CHENNAI.

The person from Hosur came at 6-30PM and handed us the sample, and photocopies of all Reports. Sridevi's email says that we have to meet Dr MUTHU SEKAR

Wednesday, 7 May 2008. SAVEETHA HOSPITAL. (1st visit)

Vijaya and I left house by 8-30 am in Arun's car (we engaged a driver - 125.00 for 4 hours) and reached Saveetha University and Hospital after an hour's drive. 23 - 24 km from our house.

Saveetha is a Charitable Trust (Erode) that runs this University and Hospital. Started in 1986, this was affliated to Dr MGR University earlier; it became an autonomous University in 2005. Located at 162, Poonamalee High Road, Velappanchavadi, Chennai 77. Near the Bangalore by-pass road.

We travelled via Adyar - Guindy - Kathipara jn - Porur - Kumanan Chavadi - Saveetha. At the hospital, the OP registration was just 5 rupees. Dr Muthu Sekar is a Professor in the Dept of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; he was not available today (he is in Bangalore, Dr Kumaraswany has already briefed him re Savithri) We handed the sample to Dr Yasser Arafat (!). Dr Arafat told us to come on Monday, the 12th, to collect the report and to meet Dr Muthu Sekar. Charges for testing is 100.00 only, which I paid. We were back home by 11-20.

Phoned Savithri, Jayaraman, Ramamurthy athimber, Ashok. Ramesh called us. He and Savithri are likely to reach Chennai on the night of 15th May.
Monday, 12 May 2008. SAVEETHA HOSPITAL. (2nd visit)

Today we left in Arvind's car, by 8-15 am. Dr Arafat told us to collect the Report from the Dept of Oral Pathology in 5th floor. He said it would take about 15 minutes; we reached the Dept and here we had to wait for nearly five hours! The doctors were discussing and debating among themselves, were referring to many books; and we did not know what was it all about. At 11-15 am Dr PRATHIBHA RAMANI came to us and told they are doing a fresh test and it would take an hour or so.

We went to the canteen, had dosa, and came back to Pathology Dept. More feverish discussions later, we were given the report by 1-15PM. "To Corroborate Clinically" is the report. The doctors here have differed with the Bangalore diagnosis. They have suggested to apply a cream (Nystatin) for 15 days. They did many tests, she added, to make it trebly sure of what they were telling - that it is NOT Carcinoma. She asked us a lot of questions re Savithri; we phoned Savithri at Hosur and got the info.

Phoned Savithri to purchase this Nystatin cream and start applying. She could not get this cream at Hosur; so we asked Dr SHERLIN for an equivalent - CANDID Mouth Paint was suggested. Phoned everybody (on 13th) and updated them.

Thursday, 15 May 2008. CHENNAI.

Savithiri, Ramesh, Karthik left Hosur by 12-30 in the afternoon by bus. Their original bus did not come at 1000 am and they waited for 2 and half hours. They reached Koyambedu, Chennai by 8 PM and our house by 9 PM.
Friday, 16 May 2008. SAVEETHA HOSPITAL. (3rd visit)
We two and Savithri and Ramesh left house by 8-30 am in Arvind's car. Dr Pratibha Ramani and other doctors at Pathology checked up Savithri; they took a number of digital photos and videos. They did a smear Test also and took a very small sample. Dr Pratibha told Savithri that it was a Fungal Infection only. The Pathology Dept has totally, entirely ruled out the earlier suggestion of Carcinoma. Dr Pratibha Ramani was emphatic on this - "Throw out that word," she said, "throw out that stigma!" She asked for Haemoglobin and random sugar Test (Fees Rs 30.00) Savithri has a marginally low Haemoglobin level; no sugar problem. A visibly relieved Ramesh phoned Ganesh from the hospital itself to convey this happy news.

How relieved we were! Savithri was visibly relieved. God is Great and He has listened to our Prayers. We are to meet Dr Muthu Sekar on Monday with this result.

Informed everyone re the happy news.
Monday, 19th May 2008. SAVEETHA HOSPITAL (4th visit)
Savithri, Ramesh, Karthik returned yesterday (18th) from Besantnagar / Thiruvanmiyur. This morning all five of us (Karthik is the 5th) went to Saveetha Hospital by 9-45 am, in Arvind's car. Dr Muthu Sekar checked Savithri - this is the first time he is checking her. He asked to come on Friday to see how the ointment CANDID is effective. We collected the report of the smear Test done on 16th. Dr Pratibha Ramani told today also "Throw out that Stigma!" They gave back the slides and sample (Bangalore). We were home by 12-30.

Today we got a mail from Jayaraman, attacking Ramesh and Savithri (he says that Ramesh did not phone him) We phoned Sugavanam & Sundaresan at Pune re this mail, but their attitude has upset Savithri much more. I am bewildered by the attitude of Jayaraman -- "I have totally removed her (Savithri) from my mind. Do not talk about her!" says he.

Friday 23 May 2008. SAVEETHA HOSPITAL (5th visit)

We four left house by 8-40 am and met Dr Muthu Sekar at Saveetha. He checked up and told us to continue the ointment and come after 10 days. He said to collect a prescription for oral medication from another doctor.

This doctor, Dr GNANA SUNDARAM is the head of the Dept of Oral Diagnosis and the Seniormost Professor in the College! He started digging from the scratch, asked many questions, wanted a second biopsy done at Saveetha ("how could they conclude that this is Candidiasis?") He called for Dr Muthu Sekar, Dr Pratibha Ramani for personal explanations. Muthu Sekar came but Dr Pratibha could not come for discussions. Gnana Sundaram then asked us to meet the Head, Pathology - Dr CHANDRA SEKAR for his opinion. All of us were scared by this turn of events.

Dr Chandrasekar saw all the reports and agreed with Dr Muthu Sekar - to continue the ointment for a couple of weeks and come back after 15 days to see the effect. He ruled out second biopsy and all that. We were relieved and returned home by 1-15 PM.

Only Sugavanam and Periya Manni phoned. All others are continuing their silence.

Savithri, Ramesh and Karthik left Chennai by 1230 midnight bus for Hosur. She would come to Chennai by June 9th.

Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram

ANNA CENTENARY LIBARARY (அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம்) is a newly established State Library of Tamilnadu. It was declared open on 15th Sept 2010. Located in Kotturpuram, Chennai. This last Sunday, 1st May 2011, we hit upon the idea - we will go and see this library. No serious reason, but a sudden whiff of fancy. Vijaya, her old classmate and friend Mrs Prema, and I left house at 3-30PM. A bus upto Madhya Kailash, and an auto thereon, left us at the gates of this huge, beautiful building at 4 PM. From the outside, it was immensely impressive and imposing - maybe of 9 or 10 floors, exquisitely constructed. As we walked the lawns to reach the Main Entrance, the interest in us was bubbling. (Caution: Handbags, Cameras are strictly prohibited. Even waterbottles are not allowed inside the halls.) There is a 5-feet bronze statue of Mr CN Annadurai, in whose name and honour this library is built. This is the Tamilnadu Chief minister Mr M Karunanidhi's pet project and he, as usual, has ov...

Dr. MUTHULAKSHMI REDDY

Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy The road from Adyar Signal to Thiruvanmiyur signal (in Chennai) is called Lattice Bridge Road (LB Road); this English name was re-christened as Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Road long back, but the old English name only prevails now. Who is this Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy? In the princely state of Pudukkottai there lived Narayanaswami Iyer who married a devadasi by name Chandramma - this marriage created a sensation that time. To this couple, eight children were born out of whom four died as infants. Muthulakshmi was one that survived (born: 30 July 1886). Muthulakshmi went to a school in Pudukottai till the age of 13; later she studied at home tutored by teachers. She passed matriculation in the year 1902. She started dreaming about becoming a graduate. Bur her father, with meagre pension could not send her ...
