Savithri and Saveetha Hospital - Part 1

21 April 2008 to 6 May 2008

This is the start of a three-months long hospital saga that saw many twists and sudden turns and ended on 12 July 2008. Part 1 (total five Parts) follows:

Monday, 21st April 2008. CHENNAI

This morning we got a call from Savithri from Hosur; she said she has a growth (white patch) inside her mouth; she had consulted local dentists at Hosur. Ganesh and Sridevi asked her to go to a Dentist at Bangalore for consultation. Sridevi's akka's husband is the Dean of a Dental College and Hospital in the USA and he has suggested the name of Dr SV Kumaraswamy at Jayanagar, Bangalore.

Savithri is plainly scared. Naturally. Savithri wants someone to accompany her when she visits the doctor and she wanted to know if we have any plans of going to blr this week. We said "no plans" but Ashok and Neeraja would help her. Ashok phoned Savithri and confirmed he and Neeraja would help her.

Wednesday, 23 April, 2008. CHENNAI

Savithri confirmed that the appointment with Dr SV Kumaraswamy in Jayanagar Bangalore is at 4 PM, on Saturday (26 Apr). Sridevi's mother is taking full care of the situation. She would take Savithri to the doctor. Ashok and Neeraja would join them at the nursing home.

Saturday, 26 April 2008. BANGALORE.

Savithri went to the doctor SV Kumaraswamy in the evening; she had reached Bangalore this morning and is staying with Sridevi's parents. Ashok and Neeraja went to the doctor's place. Doctor wants to have a Biopsy done; since Savithri is taking some medication, the doctor advised her to stop taking it and then come back on 29 April.

Tuesday, 29 April 2008. BANGALORE.

The biopsy was done by 4 PM in the evening, by Dr Kumaraswamy; the results would be known on Friday (2 May). Mami and Neeraja were with Savithri. Savithri left for Hosur.

Friday, 2 May 2008. BANGALORE.

Ashok - Neeraja could not collect the Report as there was a very heavy downpour in Bangalore the whole day.

Saturday, 3 May 2008. BANGALORE

The report was collected. "SUGGESTIVE OF VERRUCOUS CARCINOMA", the report says. Most shocking. Savithri and Oral Cancer? Unbelievable. Ashok can't tell this to Savithri over phone, how can he? He talked to Ramesh instead and informed him.

Ashok and Neeraja are going to Hosur tomorrow to hand over the Report and the biopsy sample / slides. The doctor has asked for a second opinion, a review, from Saveetha Dental College and Hospital, Chennai.

Sunday, 4 May 2008. HOSUR.

Ashok & Neeraja went to Hosur. The sample/ slide will be sent to us through someone who is coming to Chennai. Savithri is shaken and scared.

This entire matter has not been revealed to anyone else, apart from us.

Monday, 5 May 2008. CHENNAI

Savithri phoned in the morning; the person is coming tomorrow with the sample. And she herself is reaching here on Sunday the 11th May for the "treatment". The procedure, according to her, would take one day if local anasthesia is given; or 2 days' admission in the hospital if whole_body_anasthesia is given.

Savithri has informed Sugavanam, Periya Manni, Sundaresan, Jayaraman, Saroja, Mangalam, Padma. Everyone is shocked.

Tuesday, 6 May 2008. CHENNAI.

The person from Hosur came at 6-30PM and handed us the sample, and photocopies of all Reports. Sridevi's email says that we have to meet Dr MUTHU SEKAR

Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram

ANNA CENTENARY LIBARARY (அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம்) is a newly established State Library of Tamilnadu. It was declared open on 15th Sept 2010. Located in Kotturpuram, Chennai. This last Sunday, 1st May 2011, we hit upon the idea - we will go and see this library. No serious reason, but a sudden whiff of fancy. Vijaya, her old classmate and friend Mrs Prema, and I left house at 3-30PM. A bus upto Madhya Kailash, and an auto thereon, left us at the gates of this huge, beautiful building at 4 PM. From the outside, it was immensely impressive and imposing - maybe of 9 or 10 floors, exquisitely constructed. As we walked the lawns to reach the Main Entrance, the interest in us was bubbling. (Caution: Handbags, Cameras are strictly prohibited. Even waterbottles are not allowed inside the halls.) There is a 5-feet bronze statue of Mr CN Annadurai, in whose name and honour this library is built. This is the Tamilnadu Chief minister Mr M Karunanidhi's pet project and he, as usual, has ov...

Dr. MUTHULAKSHMI REDDY

Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy The road from Adyar Signal to Thiruvanmiyur signal (in Chennai) is called Lattice Bridge Road (LB Road); this English name was re-christened as Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Road long back, but the old English name only prevails now. Who is this Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy? In the princely state of Pudukkottai there lived Narayanaswami Iyer who married a devadasi by name Chandramma - this marriage created a sensation that time. To this couple, eight children were born out of whom four died as infants. Muthulakshmi was one that survived (born: 30 July 1886). M's sister Nallamuthu, learned English, went on to study in UK, became a Professor in QMC, Chennai, and later its Principal - the first Indian principal of QMC. Muthulakshmi went to a school in Pudukottai till the age of 13; later she studied at home tutored by teachers. She passed matriculation in the year 1902. She started dreaming about becoming a graduate. Bur her father, with meagre pension could not send her ...
