Our Residences at Chennai

Vijaya and I shifted to Chennai from Hyderabad in December 2001. I had retired on 31 August 2001 from Defence Research.

# 1 Mandapam Road, Kilpauk - Dec 2001 to Feb 2002.

Arun- Gayathri and Arvind were living at Mandapam Road, Kilpauk near the waterworks and we moved in with them. From day 1, we were on the lookout for a new, more spacious house. We (Arun) saw a hand-written ad in a supermarket that a house is vacant.

# 2 Aspiran Gardens, Kilpauk - Feb 2002 to 30 August 2005

We were satisfied with this house (3 BHK) and we shifted there - 77/85 Aspiran Gardens, 2nd Street, Kilpauk, Chennai 600010 in Feb 2002. Tel number 2644 4995. House owner Mr Ratnakar Shenoy lived on the GF and we in the I floor. The house was very convenient in all respects.

Before Arvind got married in June 2004, ARUN-GAYATHRI shifted to another house nearby. That was in May 2004. Within months, Krithika Arvind found it "difficult" to commute to Thiruvanmiyur to her music classes etc. So we shifted to Karpagam Avenue.

# 3 Karpagam Avenue, Raja Annamalaipuram 31 August 2005 to 28 November 2009.

We shifted to 24/89, 3rd Street, Karpagam avenue, Raja Annamalaipuram, Chennai - 600028 on 31 August 2005. Tel number - 2461 2845. Owner Mr Ravikumar lived on the First Floor and we on the GF.

3 BHK house, it was the most convenient house. Read here. Our grand daughter SOWMYA was born to Arun-Gayathri in May 2006 and ADITI was born to Arvind-Krithika a month later in June 2006. We were very happy living here. However, the owner suddenly asked us to vacate since he needed the house for his office space. So, we shifted to another rented house at Besantnagar in Nov 2009.

Earlier in November 2005 (?), Arun-Gayathri shifted to 1st Cross street, Radhakrishnan nagar main road, Thiruvanmiyur (Sudha's house on 1 floor). Our grandson SRIRAM was born here on April 2008.

# 4. Besantnagar, Chennai 600090 :: 28 November 2009 to ??

We shifted to A1/14-1, SAIRAM, 22nd Cross Street, Besantnagar, Chennai 600090 on 28 November 2009. Ground floor. Tel number 2446 5465. Larger than Karpagam avenue house, it is very near to Elliots Beach. Owner Alladi Prabhakar, lives in Hyderabad. Read here for more details.

Krithika's father sold his Ashoknagar house and is constructing a house at Thiruvanmiyur. The Bhoomi Poojai was performed on 21 January 2010. Two flats, one for him, and another for Krithika-Arvind. Once the construction is completed, we will shift there - to "OWN HOUSE".

Kumar celebrated his Sashti Aptha Poorthy (60th birthday) on 03 June 2009 at Annanagar West. Rudra Ekadasi was performed at 05:00 AM; we didn't attend this. On 3rd, we two and Ganesan took ARUN's car with a driver and went to Annanagar by 0815. The rituals were going on already. Indira, Sruthi, Akila, Raja, Aparna, Jyotsna were already there. Later, Saroja, Athimber came. Gayathri, Sowmya, Sriram came with Sudha and her inlaws in a calltaxi. Krithika came with Aditi in their car, with a driver. Arvind took ill suddenly, so he couldn't come. TSG and mami came. The function was a nice one; it was over by 1215 PM. After lunch all of us started leaving. Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram

ANNA CENTENARY LIBARARY (அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம்) is a newly established State Library of Tamilnadu. It was declared open on 15th Sept 2010. Located in Kotturpuram, Chennai. This last Sunday, 1st May 2011, we hit upon the idea - we will go and see this library. No serious reason, but a sudden whiff of fancy. Vijaya, her old classmate and friend Mrs Prema, and I left house at 3-30PM. A bus upto Madhya Kailash, and an auto thereon, left us at the gates of this huge, beautiful building at 4 PM. From the outside, it was immensely impressive and imposing - maybe of 9 or 10 floors, exquisitely constructed. As we walked the lawns to reach the Main Entrance, the interest in us was bubbling. (Caution: Handbags, Cameras are strictly prohibited. Even waterbottles are not allowed inside the halls.) There is a 5-feet bronze statue of Mr CN Annadurai, in whose name and honour this library is built. This is the Tamilnadu Chief minister Mr M Karunanidhi's pet project and he, as usual, has ov...

Dr. MUTHULAKSHMI REDDY

Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy The road from Adyar Signal to Thiruvanmiyur signal (in Chennai) is called Lattice Bridge Road (LB Road); this English name was re-christened as Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Road long back, but the old English name only prevails now. Who is this Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy? In the princely state of Pudukkottai there lived Narayanaswami Iyer who married a devadasi by name Chandramma - this marriage created a sensation that time. To this couple, eight children were born out of whom four died as infants. Muthulakshmi was one that survived (born: 30 July 1886). M's sister Nallamuthu, learned English, went on to study in UK, became a Professor in QMC, Chennai, and later its Principal - the first Indian principal of QMC. Muthulakshmi went to a school in Pudukottai till the age of 13; later she studied at home tutored by teachers. She passed matriculation in the year 1902. She started dreaming about becoming a graduate. Bur her father, with meagre pension could not send her ...
