Super 30.
Perish the thought if you think that it is a Cricket team; it is not.
It is a coaching centre in a poor locality in Patna, Bihar. It coaches very poor but academically bright students of rural Bihar to qualify for IIT. For free.
Shri Anand Kumar was himself a bright but extremely poor student from Bihar, who couldn't pursue higher studies though offered by Cambridge University, UK. His mother used to prepare papads and Anand used to pedal his cycle to sell these in the lanes of Patna. This motivated him to help the poor students pursue higher studies.
He initiated this coaching centre in 2002 and soon another noble soul, the Additional Director General of Police, Bihar, Shri Abhyananda joined Anand. They called it Super 30 since they took only 30 students in a year for coaching. The poor students are accomodated free in the house itself, and Anand's mother, Jayanti Devi, prepares and gives
food to the students for free!
The students are given intensive coaching and guidance. Almost all of the students are from most-backward rural areas of Bihar. Sheer hardwork and perseverance have made this Super 30 a real success since its inception.
In the first year 2003, eighteen (of the 30) students qualified and joined IIT; in 2004 it rose to 22, and next year 2004 to 26. Year 2007 saw an amazing 28 out of 30 qualified.
This year (2008) it is still more amazing - ALL THE 30 STUDENTS have qualified !!! That too in Open quota, not in Reserved Quota.
Superlatives appear pale when you hear of the supposedly insurmountable hurdles these students have conquered. Super-30's cent-per cent success shows that merit knows no barrier.Today, the entire Patna and the State of Bihar is celebrating this success, made possible by the two intense selfless, dedicated, noble souls - Anand and Abhyananda.
Anand Kumar was invited by IIM, Ahmedabad for a special Guest Lecture. Anand also runs a Ramanujam School of Mathematics (RSM), at a nominal fees, which pays for the boarding of the Super-30 students.
