SUGAVANAM'S Varushaptikam 15-09-2017

My younger brother SUGAVANAM (Sai Krishnan) had passed away on 27 August 2016 (aavani Krishna Dasami thithi) at Chennai. One year has gone by, and his Varushaptikam was on 15th September 2017 (Friday). It was performed at Subha's house at Pallavaram.

Sothakumbam was on the first day (14th Sept), next day was Sraththam and on the 3rd day (16 Sept, Saturday) was Grekkiam or Subasweekaram.

We two, and Arvind, Krithika, Arjun, left on 15th at 0730 AM for Pallavaram. We did not attend the previous day's rites of Sothakumbam. Pattu Manni had reached Pallavaram on the night 0f 13th and she attended it. Sastrigal came by 11-15 AM and the ritual was completed in one hour. Lunch for Sastrigal and Magesh, Subha, Pattu Manni, and two kids were over by 1-30 PM.

The cook who was arranged, did not come, so Sudha and Subha had started cooking. Sudha had arrived the previous night from Thiruvanmiyur. Vijaya and Krithika changed into 9-yards sari (madisar) and joined in the cooking.

Sastrigal (Ranganathan) and two Brahmins came by 11-45 and started the proceedings. Mahesh performed it. After it was over all of us ate. Two Brahmins, Pattu Manni, we two, Sudha and family, Subha and family, Arun, Sowmya, Sriram, Arvind, Krithika, Arjun ate.

Later, Arun, Arvind and family left for Thiruvanmiyur. We stayed back. Sudhakar came by 8-30 PM from Thane. Also his son Jaya Krishna. By 12 mid night Srikanth came from Delhi.

Next morning (16th Sep), we got up by 4 AM, took bath. Vijayaraghavan, Sarada mami, Seethalakshmi mami (Magesh mother), Hari, Arvind and family, Arun and family, Saroja, Mangalam, Sudhan, Jayaraman, Kalyani, Hyderabad Raju and his wife Savithri, Anand (Srikanth son), came for the rites.

It was over by 1-30 PM and we had lunch (from a caterer, Nanganallur). The lunch was arranged downstairs in the garage. Total 37 people. Later everyone left. We two, Arvind and family, Pattu Manni, Sudhakar, Jaya Krishna  were only left (apart from Sudha, Subha and families). Priya, Rajesh, Anirudh came at 2-30 PM. Srikanth and Anand left at 3 PM for V Koil.

Sudha and family left by 6-30PM and we by 7-30PM. It was a grand function, attended by most of our local relative. Except for Prakash and Ramesh.

God Bless all.

Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram

ANNA CENTENARY LIBARARY (அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம்) is a newly established State Library of Tamilnadu. It was declared open on 15th Sept 2010. Located in Kotturpuram, Chennai. This last Sunday, 1st May 2011, we hit upon the idea - we will go and see this library. No serious reason, but a sudden whiff of fancy. Vijaya, her old classmate and friend Mrs Prema, and I left house at 3-30PM. A bus upto Madhya Kailash, and an auto thereon, left us at the gates of this huge, beautiful building at 4 PM. From the outside, it was immensely impressive and imposing - maybe of 9 or 10 floors, exquisitely constructed. As we walked the lawns to reach the Main Entrance, the interest in us was bubbling. (Caution: Handbags, Cameras are strictly prohibited. Even waterbottles are not allowed inside the halls.) There is a 5-feet bronze statue of Mr CN Annadurai, in whose name and honour this library is built. This is the Tamilnadu Chief minister Mr M Karunanidhi's pet project and he, as usual, has ov...

Dr. MUTHULAKSHMI REDDY

Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy The road from Adyar Signal to Thiruvanmiyur signal (in Chennai) is called Lattice Bridge Road (LB Road); this English name was re-christened as Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Road long back, but the old English name only prevails now. Who is this Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy? In the princely state of Pudukkottai there lived Narayanaswami Iyer who married a devadasi by name Chandramma - this marriage created a sensation that time. To this couple, eight children were born out of whom four died as infants. Muthulakshmi was one that survived (born: 30 July 1886). M's sister Nallamuthu, learned English, went on to study in UK, became a Professor in QMC, Chennai, and later its Principal - the first Indian principal of QMC. Muthulakshmi went to a school in Pudukottai till the age of 13; later she studied at home tutored by teachers. She passed matriculation in the year 1902. She started dreaming about becoming a graduate. Bur her father, with meagre pension could not send her ...
