Subashni's Marriage at Salem

Shri Ramani  Butter (ரமணி பட்டர்) of circa 1725 is my 7th ancestor. He is followed by Srikanta Iyer, then Sri Venkatesa Iyer - Alamemu Ammal, then Sri CHIDAMBARA Iyer - Seethalakshmi Ammal.

This great grand thatha of mine had four sons, the youngest being Sri BC NARAYANASWMY IYER. (b:1864). He married three, one after the other, the first two wives, Swarnambal, Lalitambal both died in their early age. He married a third, YOGAMBAL (b;1819). Narayanaswamy Iyer - Yogambal are my Thatha - Paatti (maternal side)

.They had 10 children - six female and four males. Thus I have four maternal uncles - மாமாக்கள் - Chidambaram Iyer, Venkata subramaniam (Raju), Krishnamoorthy, and Srinivasan.

They all lived and died  in the Maravaneri area of SALEM town. Thus I may call Salem as my mother's hometown. Saroja, Savithri, Sugavanam were born in Salem.

My periya mama Chidambaram had three sons - Narayanaswamy (Gopu), Jagannathan (Jakku), and Sugavanam (Sukku) - and two daughters - Swarnam and Lalita. Gopu lives at the ancestral house at Salem, Jagannathan at Bangalore, Swarnam and Sugavanam at Chennai. Lalitha passed away in 2012.

Gopu Anna (we call him Anna only) is now 83 but very energetic, active, and social. He has three daughters Yogambal, Revathy, SwarnaKala, and a son Chidambaram (Ravi).  Yoga has two daughers Jaya Niranjani, and Subashni. Niranjani is married (to Balamurali), has a son and they live in USA. Subashni lives with her parents Yoga and Dr Ramesh at Salem; Gopu Anna lives with them.

SUBASHNI

They fixed up the marriage of Subashni with one Karthik (working in Bangalore); the marriage was at Salem on 12 June 2013. I became "friends" with Subashni on Facebook and I grew very fond of this young woman and she too called me THATHA very affectionately. Because of this, I was invited for the marriage. I decided to go and booked our tickets.

Vijaya and I started on 10th June by 2:30 afternoon train. Savithri started from Hosur by bus at the same time almost. We met at the Salem  Railway station at 7:45 PM and took an auto to the JVN Kalyana Mandapam. After food and meeting / chatting with Gopu anna, Yoga, Dr Ramesh and Subashni we left for the JPA  lodge a km away, where a room had been booked by Dr Ramesh for us.

SUBASHNI with Savithri and Vijaya

Next day 11-06-2013, we attended the Vratham function and met Geetha, Kalpagam (both daughters of Kittu Mama) and Vijaya (Seenu mama daughter) and her daughter Prasanna etc from Bangalore. We met and talked with many relatives. Then Geetha took us for a sightseeing tour of all 4 mamas' houses in Maravaneri and also to the Sri Swarnambika sametha Sri Sugavaneswarar the ancient Shiva koil. Some sari purchases by Vijaya.

Evening we attended Nichaya thaartham and Reception functions. A good crowd attended. We three went to the house of Savithri's relative for an hour. Meals at the Mandapam and came back to the lodge.

WEDNESDAY, the 12th JUNE 2013.

We came to the mandapam by 7:30 AM and attended all the functions. Subashni married Karthik. A very large crowd came for the marriage also. Yoga and Ramesh presented us with வேஷ்டி, புடைவை. Lunch, later we three vacated the lodge by 2:30 PM and proceeded in an auto to Salem Jn. Fortunately, Savithri's train to Hosur (3:40PM) and ours to Chennai (4:35) were expected in the same PF no 4. After seeing off Savithri, we boarded our train an hour later.

Our train was very crowded though reserved. Reached Chennai by 10:15 PM, took a bus home. Arvind picked us at 11:30 PM.

Thus, the marriage of Subashni was a grand function, and we could meet Yoga-Ramesh and their family, Revathy-Ganesh their daughter Sricharranya and her husband Krishnan, Kala and her husband Seshadri, Ravi, his wife Kausalya and son Rajganesh, Swarnam Akka, athimber, their son Sadasivam, and daughter Jayasri Subramaniam, Nirmala (Lalitha's daughter), Sugavanam, Geetha and her two sons etc. Fantastic and very nice experience.

Thank you Gopu Anna. God Bless Subashni and Karthik and all others.

Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram

ANNA CENTENARY LIBARARY (அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம்) is a newly established State Library of Tamilnadu. It was declared open on 15th Sept 2010. Located in Kotturpuram, Chennai. This last Sunday, 1st May 2011, we hit upon the idea - we will go and see this library. No serious reason, but a sudden whiff of fancy. Vijaya, her old classmate and friend Mrs Prema, and I left house at 3-30PM. A bus upto Madhya Kailash, and an auto thereon, left us at the gates of this huge, beautiful building at 4 PM. From the outside, it was immensely impressive and imposing - maybe of 9 or 10 floors, exquisitely constructed. As we walked the lawns to reach the Main Entrance, the interest in us was bubbling. (Caution: Handbags, Cameras are strictly prohibited. Even waterbottles are not allowed inside the halls.) There is a 5-feet bronze statue of Mr CN Annadurai, in whose name and honour this library is built. This is the Tamilnadu Chief minister Mr M Karunanidhi's pet project and he, as usual, has ov
