We Went to Tiruchy

We two went to Tiruchy on 10th November 2010. Vijaya's chiththappa's grandson DEEPAK (s/o GV Kumar) got married to Aarthee there. We took Pallavan Exp on 10th afternoon to go to Tiruchy where we stayed at a hotel nearby Railway station.

Next morning (11th Nov), we went to Srirangam koil by 7-30AM. Srirangam koil is a very large koil with many Sannadhis.  We worshipped at all sannadhies incl Thaayaar Sannadhi. At Srirangam, we went to Gayathri's mama's (Sundaresan) house also.

From there we went to Thiruvanaikoil and worshipped Sri Jambukeshwarar - Akhilandeswari Amman.  One of the Panchabootha Stalams, this also  is a very large and ancient koil. It represents water (Neer) and even today, water oozes out near the Lingam. Then back to hotel.

Meanwhile, the bridegroom's party had arrived in the marriage hall and we went there. Vratham, lunch, evening Nichchayathaartham.

Next day (12th Nov, Friday) was the muhurtham. Deepak got married to Aarthee at 0755 AM. Then, at 0915, we two, Indira and Akila went to Thanjavur (55 km from Tiruchy) to see the BIG temple that has completed 1000 glorious years. The koil is extremely large, with a huge lingam (Shri Brahadeeswarar) and a huge Nandi. A grand and amazing koil to watch.

Next day (13th Nov) we left Tiruchy by 6-30 AM train. Ganesan and Subhadra Manni also travelled with us. We reached Egmore by 12 noon and thus ended our enjoyable trip to Tiruchy.

We two, Indira, Akila, Ganesan, Manni, Lalitha, Kumar represented GNY family. There were many relatives from Vijaya's father-side.

Later additions : On 14th Nov we attended the Reception at Mylapore, Chennai. Arun-Sriram and Arvind-Aditi also came.

Addition # 2: On 12th Nov when we were proceeding to Thanjavur, we were informed that Aarthee's (the bride) Mami, Usha, is the daughter of Lalitha who is Seenu Anna's daughter. In other words, Usha is the Peththi of Seenu Anna ! We met her and had a lively discussion. Nice to have such "unforeseen" relations.

Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram

ANNA CENTENARY LIBARARY (அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம்) is a newly established State Library of Tamilnadu. It was declared open on 15th Sept 2010. Located in Kotturpuram, Chennai. This last Sunday, 1st May 2011, we hit upon the idea - we will go and see this library. No serious reason, but a sudden whiff of fancy. Vijaya, her old classmate and friend Mrs Prema, and I left house at 3-30PM. A bus upto Madhya Kailash, and an auto thereon, left us at the gates of this huge, beautiful building at 4 PM. From the outside, it was immensely impressive and imposing - maybe of 9 or 10 floors, exquisitely constructed. As we walked the lawns to reach the Main Entrance, the interest in us was bubbling. (Caution: Handbags, Cameras are strictly prohibited. Even waterbottles are not allowed inside the halls.) There is a 5-feet bronze statue of Mr CN Annadurai, in whose name and honour this library is built. This is the Tamilnadu Chief minister Mr M Karunanidhi's pet project and he, as usual, has ov

Dr. MUTHULAKSHMI REDDY

Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy The road from Adyar Signal to Thiruvanmiyur signal (in Chennai) is called Lattice Bridge Road (LB Road); this English name was re-christened as Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Road long back, but the old English name only prevails now. Who is this Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy? In the princely state of Pudukkottai there lived Narayanaswami Iyer who married a devadasi by name Chandramma - this marriage created a sensation that time. To this couple, eight children were born out of whom four died as infants. Muthulakshmi was one that survived (born: 30 July 1886). M's sister Nallamuthu, learned English, went on to study in UK, became a Professor in QMC, Chennai, and later its Principal - the first Indian principal of QMC. Muthulakshmi went to a school in Pudukottai till the age of 13; later she studied at home tutored by teachers. She passed matriculation in the year 1902. She started dreaming about becoming a graduate. Bur her father, with meagre pension could not send her
