Our House at Kovaipudur

We had a 2-BR house at Kovaipudur, a suburb of Coimbatore, off the Palakkad highway. I purchased the one-ground land (40 x 60 feet) in 1989-90 and constructed the house in Dec 1991. It was due to the insistance of Sundaresan that I ventured into this. I knew we wont be living in this house till my retirement (which was 10 years away that time) and even after the retirement we may not live here ! So it happened to be a house-for-rentals only. Those days Sundaresan was in Coimbatore, Indira was there; but later both of them shifted.

One gentleman Mr Louduraj (God Bless him) was looking after the house, but lately he became indifferent, perhaps due to his old age. We decided to sell off the land+house. Sugavanam too has a 40 x 60 feet land, adjacent to ours, and he joined in our sell-off plan. We two couldn't get a suitable customer for the past 1 1/2 years, but our search continued. Finally, Mr MOHAN, a cousin of Vijaya - her chiththappa Krishnaswamy's eldest son - approached me for the house. It was 18 July 2008. We agreed on the price and the sale was finalised. The Registration was scheduled for 20 October 2008 (Monday) at the Sub-registrar's office at Madukkarai, Coimbatore. This blog is about our trip to Coimbatore.

Self, Vijaya, Arun, Gayathri, Sowmya, Sriram, Arvind, Krithika, Aditi started from Chennai on Thursday, the 16th October by Cheran Express. Ashok and Neeraja left Bangalore at the same time. We all joined at Coimbatore Station on 17th morning.

DAY - 1 17th Oct 2008 Friday.

I had booked a 10-seater van and it was waiting at the Station. No bath, but just coffee, and then we proceeded to our house at Kovaipudur. Arun Ashok and Arvind have not seen the house since Gruha Pravesam in Dec 1991. We met Mr Lourduraj, and spent an hour in the house and then left. Perhaps this is the LAST time we are seeing "our" house !!

We had breakfast on the way and reached J Gopalan's (my colleague at ERDL Cell, Hyderabad for over 27 years) house. Spent about 90 minutes there, packed sadam (rice) for Aditi and Sowmya and resumed our trip to Ooty. We reached the Youth Hostel at Charring Cross, Ooty, by 4 PM. Arun had booked this 8-bed hall on my suggestion. (Rs 750/ per day. The Tempo Van was released (Rs 3000.00). After a brief rest, all of us left for the Botanical Gardens which was nearby. We strolled in the Gardens and returned to our hotel room after meals. ooty was cold and we took a room heater.

DAY - 2 18th October 2008 Saturday.

We got up and took bath leisurely. Left the room by 09-30 for breakfast. Self, Vijaya, Neeraja and Krithika went to the ROSE GARDEN nearby and the rest returned for taking bath. As the Rose Garden was located on a hillock, I didn't climb it.

Later, we 4 took a bus to the LAKE where we were joined by others. Had a motor-boat ride (rs 300). The kids, Sowmya, Aditi, Sriram enjoyed the boat ride. Then we went for the TOY TRAIN ride. Lunch at a Punjabi Dhaba - I did not eat anything here. Back to the room by a Kudhirai Vandi !!

It started raining by 9 PM and Ooty became chiller.

DAY - 3 19th October 2008, Sunday.

Neeraja was to catch the 1-30 PM train from CBE, so she and Ashok left Ooty by 8 AM. Luckily they got a returning taxi to CBE (300.00). They checked in the Tamilnadu Hotel at Dr Nanjappa Road near Gandhipuram bus terminus. Arun had booked this room also, on my advice (rs 475 per day). After lunch, Neeraja boarded the train at 1-30 PM and reached Bangalore by 8-15 PM where she was met by her father.

The rest of us at Ooty had booked a Van to go to ERODE **rs 2700** (where Arun & Arvind were to board the train). We left our Youth Hostel room at Ooty at 10 AM. Breakfast later, we went to Ooty Rly Station. Arun & Arvind and their family took the Mountain Train to COONOOR. Self and Vijaya proceeded in the Van.

We had talked earlier to Mr VASU (cousin of Vijaya, younger brother of Mohan) and he met us at Coonoor and took us home. The train reachecd by 1-15 PM and Arun-Arvind also joined us at Vasu's home. There we had a nice lunch. We left Coonoor in the Van by 3-15 PM. We two got down at Mettupalayam on the way and took a bus to Gandhipuram and the hotel. Arun-Arvind proceeded to ERODE, but were caught in a heavy downpour. Gayathri, Krithika, Sowmya, Aditi had vomitted during the journey. They reached Erode by 8-30 PM and boarded the Yercaud Exp at 9 for Chennai. They reached Chennai by 4-30 AM (20th Oct) and were home by 5-15.

At Coimbatore, we joined Ashok. Dinner at a good hotel and we slept off.

DAY - 4 20th October 2008, Monday

We booked a call taxi for going to Madukkarai and we left the hotel by 9-15 AM. Reached the Sub-Registrar office by 9-45 AM. Mr Mohan, his wife Mrs Tilaka (on whose name the house is being purchased), his younger brother SRIDHAR joined us 5 minutes later.

I was asked to sign in the original sale deed and also in some other paper and the sale was executed ! I am no more the owner of that Kovaipudur house, but strangely I did not feel the loss at all. You may recall how I felt so bad when the Dining Table was taken away (read here) but today I did not have any feelings whatsoever.

We three returned to our hotel room by 11-30 AM, lunch, and then Ashok left us for Railway station to catch the 1-30 PM train to Bangalore. His train reached 1 hour late and he was home by 1030PM. At CBE, we shifted to a single room (300.00 per day), slept till 4 PM and then went to Oppanakkara Street for some purchases for Sowmya- Aditi - Sriram. It started raining by 7-30 PM and we had dinner and left for Station by 9 PM. We boarded the Cheran Express and reached Chennai at 7 AM on Tuesday the 21st October 2008.

Thus came the end of our house-Sale and our trip to CBE & Ooty. All of us enjoyed the trip.

Dr. MUTHULAKSHMI REDDY

Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy The road from Adyar Signal to Thiruvanmiyur signal (in Chennai) is called Lattice Bridge Road (LB Road); this English name was re-christened as Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Road long back, but the old English name only prevails now. Who is this Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy? In the princely state of Pudukkottai there lived Narayanaswami Iyer who married a devadasi by name Chandramma - this marriage created a sensation that time. M's sister Nallamuthu, learned English, went on to study in UK, became a Professor in QMC, Chennai, and later its Principal - the first Indian principal of QMC. Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram

ANNA CENTENARY LIBARARY (அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம்) is a newly established State Library of Tamilnadu. It was declared open on 15th Sept 2010. Located in Kotturpuram, Chennai. This last Sunday, 1st May 2011, we hit upon the idea - we will go and see this library. No serious reason, but a sudden whiff of fancy. Vijaya, her old classmate and friend Mrs Prema, and I left house at 3-30PM. A bus upto Madhya Kailash, and an auto thereon, left us at the gates of this huge, beautiful building at 4 PM. From the outside, it was immensely impressive and imposing - maybe of 9 or 10 floors, exquisitely constructed. As we walked the lawns to reach the Main Entrance, the interest in us was bubbling. (Caution: Handbags, Cameras are strictly prohibited. Even waterbottles are not allowed inside the halls.) There is a 5-feet bronze statue of Mr CN Annadurai, in whose name and honour this library is built. This is the Tamilnadu Chief minister Mr M Karunanidhi's pet project and he, as usual, has ov...

Sri Sita-Rama-Anjaneya Temple, Pathakota.

Earlier i wrote about the SitaRama Anjaneya Koil at Pathakota, 17 km from Hosur, on the banks of Pennaiyaru. We two and Savithri went there on 17th Jan 2013 (read here). After I came to Bangalore,  I told about this koil to Ashok and Neeraja and they too were keen to have the darshan of Rama and Anjaneya. On 26 Jan 2013, Ashok asked me suddenly at 4-40 PM if we can go there that time. I consulted Savithri over phone and she said yes. We four left house at 5-15 in car, went to Hosur. Savithri was waiting near GRT and joined us. We reached the temple by 6.40 PM. First we went to the full-flowing Pennaiyaru and lost ourselves in the serenity and beauty of the river. The scenic beauty oof the river is breath-taking. 15 minutes later we entered the temple. Built in 1932 for Sri Anjaneya only, this temple now has Sri Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana idols installed. We had a wonderful darshan of Sri Rama and Anjaneya. Then we left Pathakota, for Sri Chandra Sudeswarar koil on a hillo...
