As we reached house, Ganesan was ready with vada paav for us. After this and then lunch, we all (except Subhadra Manni) left for seeing the Ganapatis. Read our experince

17 Sep 2007, Monday
Got up at 0730. Sundaresan phoned. He is leaving for Pune this afternoon. Sudhakar is leaving for Germany in the night (0230AM).

Evening at 5, we two walked towards Santacruz
railway station - we had travelled on this road many years ago - the Potdar school on this road has changed beyond description. We saw a couple of Ganapatis in the station road.On our way back, we walked along SV road where Arun was born in Kashibai Nursing Home. This nursing home has been demolished and was not to be found. 7PM or so NIRUPAMA came and she & Vijaya went out to purchase dinner for all of us - Paav bhaji, and ice cream. Niru left at 11PM. An enjoyable day.

18 Sep 2007 Tuesday.
Rains in Mumbai. I initiated Ganesan to Blogs. Announcement in media that there would be no water for 24 hours tomorrow in Bandra / Khar / Santacruz. What will we do?

19 Sep 2007 Wednesday.
1000 am we went to Big Bazaar Milan Subway which is a recent addition to Santacruz. About 2 km from house. We took an auto for an unthinkable fare of Rs14.00. Purchased some chocolates; then dresses for Aditi and Sowmya. Return also @ 14.00 (Can you think of this fare in Chennai?)

Evening 5 PM we two walked to Juhu beach. Ganesan suggested us to go by auto but we walked. Today is the 5th day of Ganapati Festival and there were a number of visarjans (Immersions) today.

India beat ENG in T20 - Yuvraj hits Stuart Broad for 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6 in the 19th over.

20 Sep 2007 Thursday
Rains continue. Evening we walked along the Linking Road to Khar, 2 kms away. Window shopping and window gazing. After walking for over 3 kms, we returned home by auto, for a miserly fare of Rs. 13.00 !!!! How nice it will be if Chennai also follows this fare structure! India beats South Africa in T20 and enters Semis - to meet AUS on Saturday.

 21 Sep 2007, Friday
Lunch at Ganesan's place and then we left for Shobha's house at Andheri (E). Ganesan and Manni also came. Shobha had sent her Toyoto Innova car and we picked up Anupama from her school and then reached Shobha's house by 3-30PM. Her house is very large. We had vadai there and spent time till 5-30 talking. Shobha presented a sari to Vijaya for her birthday.

We left Marol by 6 for Powai, Sudhakar's house. Took an auto. It was drizzling. As we approached his house, a km away, we got stuck up in a traffic snarl. We learnt later that it was a daily routine, this traffic snarl. It took us more than an hour to traverse a km. We reached IIT gate and phoned Revathy. She came and took us home which is very near the Gate.

The house is on the 11th floor, a small 2 BHK flat. Jayakrishna has grown tall. We had meals there by 9PM. Sudhakar who had gone to Germany returned by 12midnight. We had a chat with him and slept off. A number of Ganapatis were being immersed in the nearby Powai lake

22 Sep 2007 Saturday
Breakfast with Sudhakar. Then all of us left on foot for sight seeing - to nearby Hira Nandani complex. Very modern and large area. Went to D-Mart. Returned home, lunch, and then left at 3PM back to Santacruz. We had to wait for sometime to get a bus to Andheri (E) and from there by auto to Ganesan's place. It was drizzling.

Arun, Gayathri, and Sow left by 5PM train to Tiruchy for the mudi irakkuthal for Sow at Ariyalur on Monday. This will be her second mottai (earlier we did it on 23 Feb)

T20 - two semifinals today. PAK beat NZ in the first match. IND beat AUS in the second. Now IND will take on PAK in the Finals on Monday.

23 Sep 2007 Sunday
Vijaya's Birthday. She is 58. Ashok, Neeraja, Arvind phoned her and wished. Ravi came to Santacruz by 1-30PM after dropping Sweta at the airport. Lunch (aviyal) and then we all left for Vile Parle to Sweta's house. Spent some time there with her parents and then went to Khandivili, 15 km away to Ravi's house. Western Expressway is fantastic. His house on the 5th floor (total 25 floors) is good.

Left Khandivili by 6PM, reached CineMax theatre at Andheri (E) and saw Chak De India a Shah Rukh Khan hit film. Very good movie. Samosas, sandwiches to eat. After the movie was over at 10PM, we drove to Santacruz and had meals in a hotel. Followed by icecream from Gokul's. The movie and the dinner & icecream therafter were a treat from Ravi for Vijaya for her birthday. God bless him.

Later, Saroja, Athimber came. Gayathri, Sowmya, Sriram came with Sudha and her inlaws in a calltaxi. Krithika came with Aditi in their car, with a driver. Arvind took ill suddenly, so he couldn't come. TSG and mami came. The function was a nice one; it was over by 1215 PM. After lunch all of us started leaving. Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram

ANNA CENTENARY LIBARARY (அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம்) is a newly established State Library of Tamilnadu. It was declared open on 15th Sept 2010. Located in Kotturpuram, Chennai. This last Sunday, 1st May 2011, we hit upon the idea - we will go and see this library. No serious reason, but a sudden whiff of fancy. Vijaya, her old classmate and friend Mrs Prema, and I left house at 3-30PM. A bus upto Madhya Kailash, and an auto thereon, left us at the gates of this huge, beautiful building at 4 PM. From the outside, it was immensely impressive and imposing - maybe of 9 or 10 floors, exquisitely constructed. As we walked the lawns to reach the Main Entrance, the interest in us was bubbling. (Caution: Handbags, Cameras are strictly prohibited. Even waterbottles are not allowed inside the halls.) There is a 5-feet bronze statue of Mr CN Annadurai, in whose name and honour this library is built. This is the Tamilnadu Chief minister Mr M Karunanidhi's pet project and he, as usual, has ov...

Dr. MUTHULAKSHMI REDDY

Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy The road from Adyar Signal to Thiruvanmiyur signal (in Chennai) is called Lattice Bridge Road (LB Road); this English name was re-christened as Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Road long back, but the old English name only prevails now. Who is this Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy? In the princely state of Pudukkottai there lived Narayanaswami Iyer who married a devadasi by name Chandramma - this marriage created a sensation that time. To this couple, eight children were born out of whom four died as infants. Muthulakshmi was one that survived (born: 30 July 1886). M's sister Nallamuthu, learned English, went on to study in UK, became a Professor in QMC, Chennai, and later its Principal - the first Indian principal of QMC. Muthulakshmi went to a school in Pudukottai till the age of 13; later she studied at home tutored by teachers. She passed matriculation in the year 1902. She started dreaming about becoming a graduate. Bur her father, with meagre pension could not send her ...
