Sridhar

Sridhar Subramaniam.

Sridhar passed away suddenly on 21 June 2007 at Chennai. He was the only son of Indira, eldest sister of Vijaya. He was 45 (born 24 April 1962)

The phone call came at 7PM that evening. Most unexpected and thus most unbelievable and shocking. We were numbed and stunned. First we relayed this saddest news to Ashok and Arvind (Arvind was in Delhi, about to leave for Bangalore from there.), and Krithika who was in AshokNagar. Arun, Gayathri and Sowmi were with us at Karpagam Avenue. Then we informed Bombay. Vijaya and I then rushed to Malar Hospital, Adyar where Sridhar had been admitted earlier in the day because of chest pain.

The pain came at 1 in the morning and he was taken to Malar; it was a mild attack, so the doctors said. He was “all right” by 12 noon and he even joked and talked normally. But it was just a minor reprive; there was a massive heart attack by 2-30PM from which Sridhar couldn’t come out of. He passed away at 6-45 PM, 21 June 2007, Thursday. When we went there, Lakshmi (wife of Sridhar) was alone sitting, waiting for Sridhar’s body to be taken to their house at Perungudi. We were allowed to see Sridhar for a few seconds before it was transported to Perungudi. We two accompanied her and Sridhar’s body. It was the saddest journey we ever had. It was 8-20PM.

Indira, his mother, was inconsolable. Poor her. Akila, Sridhar’s elder sister, and Raja were there. Arvind cancelled his trip to Bangalore and came back to Chennai by 1 AM (midnight). He came to Perungudi by 2AM; none of us in the house slept during the night.

Sridhar was with us in Hyderabad for nearly 2 years way back in 1980’s (1982 – 1984) and he was the darling anna for all three children, Arun, Ashok, and Arvind. They always played with him and had great affection for him.

22nd June dawned and relatives and friends started pouring in. Lalitha, Kumar, Ranjani, Arun, Gayathri, and SOWMI came; Sugavanam, Girija, Saroja, Ramamurthy athimber, GBS (Gayathri’s father) and mami came; Arvind came with Krithika; Ganesan, Ravi, Anandh (Shobha’s husband) and Krishnaraj came from Bombay; Ashok, Neeraja, Janani, Ram, Anandh (Ramani’s son) came from Bangalore. Aparna, Jyotsna, Kamala chiththi, Lakshmi, Shyamala, GV Kumar, Mohan, his wife and son came. (Poornima, Nirupama, Shobha came on 24 June, and Ramani on 28th from Thiruvananthapuram)

The last rites started by 11-45AM; Raja performed this. One hour later, Sridhar started his last journey from home; to the Gasifier Crematorium, Besant nagar. There also some rites followed and finally, Sridhar’s mortal body was taken to the gasifier and placed on the trolley. AT 1-40PM on 22 June 2007, Friday, Sridhar went inside the gasifier and it was lit. THAT WAS THE END.

Sridhar was a very jovial, sociable, and likeable person. When Vijaya was living in their house for her college education, Sridhar was very fond of her and vice versa. After a B.Com degree from Madurai, he took up a job in Usha in Hyderabad. During 1982-84 he was with us in Hyderabad and AAA took him to their heart. He left the job and joined MBA at Kochi. There he met Lakshmi, his classmate, and they married on 21 Aug 1989 at Ernakulam. They have two darling daughters, Sweta (27-8-1992), and Sruti (22-12-1998).

Recently we have been meeting Sridhar, rather frequently – he had brought his mother Indira to our house on 24 May 2007, the first time he is coming to our house at Karpagam Avenue. That evening he had dinner with us. Then, on 26 May, we met him again in the get-together dinner (Photo on the Left) arranged by Mr. Ganesan. Then, a week later, on 3 June, we met him twice on the road at Shastrinagar; he gave me and Arun paani-poori !! On 4th June when Sowmya’s Ayushya Homam was celebrated, we met him again at the Mandapam. Again, on 17 June at the First-Birthday party of Aditi (Photo on the right). Thus we met him six or seven times in the past one month, and as recently as 4 days earlier to his passing away. So our shock and grief was that much more painful. How uncertain is a human’s Life !

With Sridhar’s passing away, his family has lost its rudder, its guiding Star. His mother, Indira, 72 (22 July 1935), is in a most pathetic condition. Let us all pray to the Almighty to give them mental fortitude and courage to bear this huge loss.

May his soul Rest in Peace.

Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram

ANNA CENTENARY LIBARARY (அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம்) is a newly established State Library of Tamilnadu. It was declared open on 15th Sept 2010. Located in Kotturpuram, Chennai. This last Sunday, 1st May 2011, we hit upon the idea - we will go and see this library. No serious reason, but a sudden whiff of fancy. Vijaya, her old classmate and friend Mrs Prema, and I left house at 3-30PM. A bus upto Madhya Kailash, and an auto thereon, left us at the gates of this huge, beautiful building at 4 PM. From the outside, it was immensely impressive and imposing - maybe of 9 or 10 floors, exquisitely constructed. As we walked the lawns to reach the Main Entrance, the interest in us was bubbling. (Caution: Handbags, Cameras are strictly prohibited. Even waterbottles are not allowed inside the halls.) There is a 5-feet bronze statue of Mr CN Annadurai, in whose name and honour this library is built. This is the Tamilnadu Chief minister Mr M Karunanidhi's pet project and he, as usual, has ov

Who is this Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy? In the princely state of Pudukkottai there lived Narayanaswami Iyer who married a devadasi by name Chandramma - this marriage created a sensation that time. To this couple, eight children were born out of whom four died as infants. Muthulakshmi was one that survived (born: 30 July 1886). M's sister Nallamuthu, learned English, went on to study in UK, became a Professor in QMC, Chennai, and later its Principal - the first Indian principal of QMC. Muthulakshmi went to a school in Pudukottai till the age of 13; later she studied at home tutored by teachers. She passed matriculation in the year 1902. She started dreaming about becoming a graduate. Bur her father, with meagre pension could not send her
