A Great Woman and Mother

A Great Woman and Mother.

Deepa Ramani is a poor widow in Chennai. She lost her husband when she was young and she had to bring up her two sons and one daughter single-handedly. Extreme hard work with a single target on mind, she toiled on. As her monthly salary as a worker in a mid-day meals scheme was just Rs. 30/- , she had to take to other jobs and means. She started preparing Idlies and other items. Her children would carry these Idlies and sell.

Her son Sharath was brilliant in studies, and as a small kid, he used to sell Idlies prepared by his mother, during mornings and evenings Time flew but Deepa Ramani and her son Sharath never wavered from their mission. Sharath passed out from School as a top ranker, joined BITS Pilani and took a B.Tech there, joined IIM (A) and top-ranked with an MBA from there. Deepa Ramani, his mother continued her hard work.

Last April (2006), Sharath was offered a Rs. 9 lakhs p/a package but he declined saying that he had a greater vision of starting a catering service, an Indian Brand that would excel international standards, and provide jobs for over 50,000 young Indians. When he made this announcement last April, Mr NR Narayana Murthy was in the dais, applauding him. The proud mother Deepa Ramani looked on with moist eyes. (This was the TOP news of that day in all Channels, did you watch?)

Sharath Babu (now 28) opened his first FoodKing outlet in Ahmedabad last year; Last week he opened his third outlet and the empire has started growing.

Isn't Deepa Ramani marvelous and wonderful? What a great woman and Mother ! Let us all salute women like Deepa Ramani, and take inspiration from such simple but beautiful human beings.

Yesterday, March 8th, being the Women's Day, Deepa Ramani was the Chief Guest at the local Velammal College for Women, where she addressed the students. She narrated how she brought up her children by selling Idlies (they have kept the vessel Sharath carried as a child to sell Idly) in a choked voice and the entire audience had tears in their eyes.(Indian Express, 9th March)

Deepa Ramani is THE real hero, won't you agree?

Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram

ANNA CENTENARY LIBARARY (அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம்) is a newly established State Library of Tamilnadu. It was declared open on 15th Sept 2010. Located in Kotturpuram, Chennai. This last Sunday, 1st May 2011, we hit upon the idea - we will go and see this library. No serious reason, but a sudden whiff of fancy. Vijaya, her old classmate and friend Mrs Prema, and I left house at 3-30PM. A bus upto Madhya Kailash, and an auto thereon, left us at the gates of this huge, beautiful building at 4 PM. From the outside, it was immensely impressive and imposing - maybe of 9 or 10 floors, exquisitely constructed. As we walked the lawns to reach the Main Entrance, the interest in us was bubbling. (Caution: Handbags, Cameras are strictly prohibited. Even waterbottles are not allowed inside the halls.) There is a 5-feet bronze statue of Mr CN Annadurai, in whose name and honour this library is built. This is the Tamilnadu Chief minister Mr M Karunanidhi's pet project and he, as usual, has ov

Dr. MUTHULAKSHMI REDDY

Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy The road from Adyar Signal to Thiruvanmiyur signal (in Chennai) is called Lattice Bridge Road (LB Road); this English name was re-christened as Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Road long back, but the old English name only prevails now. Who is this Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy? In the princely state of Pudukkottai there lived Narayanaswami Iyer who married a devadasi by name Chandramma - this marriage created a sensation that time. To this couple, eight children were born out of whom four died as infants. Muthulakshmi was one that survived (born: 30 July 1886). M's sister Nallamuthu, learned English, went on to study in UK, became a Professor in QMC, Chennai, and later its Principal - the first Indian principal of QMC. Muthulakshmi went to a school in Pudukottai till the age of 13; later she studied at home tutored by teachers. She passed matriculation in the year 1902. She started dreaming about becoming a graduate. Bur her father, with meagre pension could not send her
