Panchang Gyan

PANCHANG GYAN - Calculation of LAGNAM

We know that Sun travels through the 12 zodiac signs (rasis) in one year; that is one rasi per Tamil month. On Tamil New year day (Chiththirai first day), Sun enters the first rasi - Mesham.
On Vaikasi 1st, he enters the second rasi - Rishabam. And so on. Since each rasi subtends an arc of 30 degrees, he travels app. 1 deg per day.

Every day, the Sun travels through all the 12 rasis. Now these are called as LAGNAS of the day. At the exact time of sunrise, it starts in the rasi (lagnam) corresponding to the month (Chithrai = Mesham etc). and after travelling thru that lagnam, it enters the next lagnam, travels thru this lagnam, then enters 3rd lagnam -- etc etc, till the next sunrise. Thus, we see that the time taken to travel thru one lagnam will be 24 hours / 12 lagnams = 2 hours (approx ) in one lagnam.

Converting this in Tamil units, it would mean 5 naazhigais per lagnam (one hour = 2 1/2 naazhigais). But it is exactly not so. The time per lagnam depends on (i) the lagnam itself and (ii) the latitude of the place. This is given as a table in Panchang (page 6 of Paambu panchang). For Chennai (13 deg North), it is Mesham: 4 28, Rishabam: 5 3 etc to Meenam: 4 10.

As Sun travels 1 deg per day, its place in the lagnam on every subsequent day at sunrise will also be advanced by app 1 deg. Thus the time to travel thru that sunrise-lagnam will naturally become less and less on every subsequent sunrise. This balance time (to travel thru the sunrise-lagnam) is given as Mesha-iruppu, Rishaba-Iruppu etc for every month (see col 2 in the Panchang correponding to the month). On a particular day, the Sun will travel thru the corresponding Lagnam for the time given in col 2;then the next lagnam etc.

As an example, Srikanth's son was born at 06-40 on Chithrai 29 (12/05/2006). Sunrise on that day at Hyderabad was at 05-45. So the time of birth was 55 minutes after sunrise, or 2 naazhigai 17 minutes. This is known as Udayadhi Naazhigai. See col 2 for Chithrai 29th - you see Mesha iruppu (baln in Mesham) as 0 N 29 minutes. After this period, Sun will start its travel in Rishabam. Referring to page 6, for latitude 17 deg (Hyderabad), we see Rishabam has 4 N 59 m. Since the child's Udayadhi Naazhigai is 2 n 17 m, the child was born in RISHABA Lagnam.

For Arun's child (vaikasi 3rd, time 17:05, sunrise 05-43, Udayadhi Naazhigai is 28 n 24 m, Rishaba iruppu = 4 n 43 min) page 12 for vaikasi month. For subsequent Lagnam periods, we will refer to page 6, corr to Latitude 13 deg. Start from this 4:43 in Rishabam, go on adding the subsequent periods (Mithunam=5:29, Katakam=5:22 etc) till you reach the Udayadhi naazhigai (28:24) You will see that she was born in THULA Lagnam.

This is how the LAGNAM is calculated.

Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram

ANNA CENTENARY LIBARARY (அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம்) is a newly established State Library of Tamilnadu. It was declared open on 15th Sept 2010. Located in Kotturpuram, Chennai. This last Sunday, 1st May 2011, we hit upon the idea - we will go and see this library. No serious reason, but a sudden whiff of fancy. Vijaya, her old classmate and friend Mrs Prema, and I left house at 3-30PM. A bus upto Madhya Kailash, and an auto thereon, left us at the gates of this huge, beautiful building at 4 PM. From the outside, it was immensely impressive and imposing - maybe of 9 or 10 floors, exquisitely constructed. As we walked the lawns to reach the Main Entrance, the interest in us was bubbling. (Caution: Handbags, Cameras are strictly prohibited. Even waterbottles are not allowed inside the halls.) There is a 5-feet bronze statue of Mr CN Annadurai, in whose name and honour this library is built. This is the Tamilnadu Chief minister Mr M Karunanidhi's pet project and he, as usual, has ov
