Amma's Sraththam - 2011

Amma's Sraththam - 2011

We three brothers (Sugavanam, Jayaraman, and self) perform the sraththams of our parents every year at Chennai; our elder brother Sundaresan performs at Dapodi, Pune.

Amma's Thithi is Aani, Krishna Paksham, Ashtami.

This year (2011) amma's thithi came on Thursday, 23rd June. This is the first ever sraththam that we are performing at our OWN house (Flat F2, No 3, Kalakshetra Avenue, 2nd Street, Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai 41). All these years we were doing it in rented houses.

Vijaya and I purchased the grocery items and Vaathiyar saamangal from Marthandam Stores, Lakshmipuram, Thiruvanmiyur. Varatti from a kadai near Marundeeswarar koil. A day before the thithi, we purchased all the vegetables, fruits incl vaazhaipazham from Thiruvanmiyur market. On 23rd morning I purchased Vaazhai Ilai and Pushpam from  North Mada Street Thiruvanmiyur. This year too I missed the Mylapore ambience. Except for blouse bits from Amudam Stores, we didn't do any other purchase from South Mada steet, Mylapore.

On 22nd evening, Vijaya and I cut vegetables. and made all prelim works.

On 23rd, the day of Sraththam, we two got up by 4-15 AM and started the work. Jayaraman, Kalyani, Poornima were the first to arrive by 6-45. They were followed by other relatives.

Everyone - Vijaya, Saroja, Kalyani, Rajeswari were extremely busy in cooking and allied jobs.

Sastrigal came by 10-00 and started the rites at 10-20. I performed the Sraththam with participation from Sugavanam and Jayaraman. After 2 hours, the Brahmanals had their lunch by 12-15 noon and the rituals got over by 1PM. Vathiyar dakshinai was 250+250+400 this year, increased from last year's dakshinai.

At 1-15 or so we ate. We two, Aditi, Padma, Prakash, Rajeswari, Saroja, Athimber,  Sugavanam, Sudha, Darshini, Jayaraman, Kalyani, Vijay, Poornima ate. Rajeswari helped Vijaya, Kalyani in serving. There were two batches for eating.

We did the sraththam in the Hall and the new house has a large space since dining area is separated from the hall.

After resting for 2 hours, everyone started leaving by 3-30.

Thus the Sraththam of Amma went off well. Expenses 2712.00 We brothers gave blouse bits to our four sisters, Rajeswari, and Sudha.

Comments

  1. Good to see the ritual to parents. I remember I hv written the comments last time. Do we need to post the expense in public which we do it for parents and sisters. This is my humble opinion. You are senior and you know better than anyone. If it's mistake, please forgive.

Anna Centenary Library, Kotturpuram

ANNA CENTENARY LIBARARY (அண்ணா நூற்றாண்டு நூலகம்) is a newly established State Library of Tamilnadu. It was declared open on 15th Sept 2010. Located in Kotturpuram, Chennai. This last Sunday, 1st May 2011, we hit upon the idea - we will go and see this library. No serious reason, but a sudden whiff of fancy. Vijaya, her old classmate and friend Mrs Prema, and I left house at 3-30PM. A bus upto Madhya Kailash, and an auto thereon, left us at the gates of this huge, beautiful building at 4 PM. From the outside, it was immensely impressive and imposing - maybe of 9 or 10 floors, exquisitely constructed. As we walked the lawns to reach the Main Entrance, the interest in us was bubbling. (Caution: Handbags, Cameras are strictly prohibited. Even waterbottles are not allowed inside the halls.) There is a 5-feet bronze statue of Mr CN Annadurai, in whose name and honour this library is built. This is the Tamilnadu Chief minister Mr M Karunanidhi's pet project and he, as usual, has ov

Dr. MUTHULAKSHMI REDDY

Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy The road from Adyar Signal to Thiruvanmiyur signal (in Chennai) is called Lattice Bridge Road (LB Road); this English name was re-christened as Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Road long back, but the old English name only prevails now. Who is this Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy? In the princely state of Pudukkottai there lived Narayanaswami Iyer who married a devadasi by name Chandramma - this marriage created a sensation that time. To this couple, eight children were born out of whom four died as infants. Muthulakshmi was one that survived (born: 30 July 1886). M's sister Nallamuthu, learned English, went on to study in UK, became a Professor in QMC, Chennai, and later its Principal - the first Indian principal of QMC. Muthulakshmi went to a school in Pudukottai till the age of 13; later she studied at home tutored by teachers. She passed matriculation in the year 1902. She started dreaming about becoming a graduate. Bur her father, with meagre pension could not send her
